GREAT FALLS- A Fort Peck Tribal Officer was sentenced on Thursday for breaking into an evidence room while on duty.
Officer Mikkel Shields received a one-year prison sentence and a year of supervised releases and must pay $1,149.06 in restitution. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Brian Morris in Great Falls.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Shields admitted to stealing drug evidence from the Fort Peck Law and Justice Building.
That evidence included methamphetamine, prescription drugs, marijuana and cash.
He told investigators he took the items because he "just needed them" and he was a “weak person.”
Because of Shields’ case, the Fort Peck Tribe dismissed 27 criminal cases which include other drug cases, assaults and property crimes.
