BILLINGS- FirstMark Materials has canceled its Thursday evening meeting with neighbors about a proposed gravel pit near Oscar’s Park.

The company made the cancellation because of water quality problems, according to Ed Walker, FirstMark business development manager.

“We discovered in our water quality testing some potential problems coming from upstream in the groundwater,” Walker said. “We are in the process of retesting to confirm the results. Because of these findings, we need to engineer a plan to remediate the problem.”

The proposed open pit gravel mine would be on landnear Wise Lane and Story Road.

FirstMark also asked the Yellowstone County Zoning Commission to postpone a meeting on Monday.

Walker said FirstMark will only enter into the project if it is able to fix the problem.

He also said he expects the DEQ to call for a public meeting for the neighbors.
