BILLINGS- At a mid-day press conference to address the nation, President Donald Trump has announced he supports a three-week stopgap spending bill that would reopen the government.
At the same time negotiations would begin on border security funding.
“No border security plan can work without a physical barrier, it just doesn’t work,” said Trump.
The plan would not provide immediate funding for a wall.
CBS News has previously reported that leaders zeroed in on an agreement that includes a short-term resolution to Feb. 15, and a vehicle to go to conference on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill.
No money for a border wall would be included in this deal. The bill will also include a furloughed employees backpay provision.
It wasn’t clear what would be in the border security discussions or who would be taking part in it.
If a bill can be passed today it would reopen the government after a 35-day shutdown.
Trump also said his plan also included humanitarian aid that is desperately needed.
The requests we have put before Congress are vital,” said Trump.
