BILLINGS- Children had a chance to skate on the ice and play some hockey for the first time.

About 30 kids came to Centennial Ice Arena for “Try Hockey For Free.”

USA Hockey helps the Billings Amateur Hockey League (BAHL) with the event to promote the sport.

The coaches showed the kids how to skate, shoot and have fun.

“The best thing about hockey is anyone can do it,” said Zach Wilson, a coach with the BAHL.  “You can be girl, boy, 12 years old or five years old. You can start at any time. The hardest part is skating. Being able to stand up on skates is pretty hard. Typically you see girls pick it up faster than boys do. Their center of balance is a lot better at younger ages than boys.”

The Billings Amateur Hockey League will hold its next “Try Hockey for Free” in November.
