MISSOULA – One of Missoula’s long-standing nonprofit organizations that served thousands of children will close its doors at the end of May.
In a press release issued Thursday morning, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Missoula Board of Directors said they are heartbroken to announce after 49 years serving the community they are closing their doors May 31.
The nonprofit organization has been struggling after major cuts in funding from state, federal and private grants. They say their grants were cut by $120,000.
BBBS Board of Directors said they reduced staff and identified new fundraising sources and models, but ultimately they were unsuccessful in making up for the significant loss.
The 2019 Big Event, previously set to occur on June 7, is cancelled. BBBS directors said they are currently working with another nonprofit organization in hopes of continuing a portion of their current matches in another program and will continue to update the community.
Big Brother Big Sisters of Missoula Board of Directors issued this statement:
“We want to thank the thousands of individuals who have supported our organization over the past 49 years. Countless donors, volunteers, businesses, and employees made it possible to foster mentorships for some 15,000 children in our community. Your generosity made an immeasurable difference in the lives of children, and undoubtedly changed the lives of their Bigs as well.”
“Finally, to the 103 Littles who are currently matched with mentors in our program, we are so sorry that we fell short. We hope you know how difficult this decision was and that we did everything we could to try to keep our doors open. Your potential is limitless, and we wish you all the best.”
