BILLINGS – Montana wildlife officials are offering safety tips to deal with mountain lions after two separate sightings over the weekend in Billings.
A mountain lion was spotted once in the Heights on Alkali Creek Road, and once below the Rims near Montana State University-Billings.
Officials believe but haven’t confirmed that the same mountain lion was spotted both times.
MSUB police sent out a public safety advisory after a mountain lion was spotted Friday near MSUB on Silver and Virginia lanes.
Bob Gibson of Fish, Wildlife and Parks says it’s not unusual for mountain lions to be spotted at this time of year because of outdoor activities, little animals and garbage. He says it is, however, a little more unusual for them to be spotted below the Rims.
Here are some rules from FWP if you do encounter a mountain lion.
- Do not approach or run from the lion
- Try to appear larger than the lion
- Be as vocal as you can
- Talk calmly and regularly
Also, be careful of any small animals and children running around and clean up your garbage.
