A popular dairy farm in Kalispell has updated its offerings and is now selling ground beef.
Known statewide for their dairy products, Kalispell Kreamery has expanded its menu during a time of need.
The Kalispell Beef Company sells extra-lean ground beef from its cull cows, cows that are no longer producing milk.
Co-owner Mary Tuck said they noticed a beef shortage in Montana due to the covid-19 pandemic. She said the dairy operation always wanted to start producing ground beef and figured this was the perfect time to do it.
“And so we thought that this might be a really good opportunity for us to be able to provide the community with a need, as well as for us to try something new that we had kind of been considering, but weren’t quite wanting to take that leap yet,” said Tuck.
Tuck said producing ground beef gives the cows an end of life plan and a second purpose after delivering dairy.
“We thought what better way to serve our community, to offer them ground beef from our cows that they know came from cows that were treated well, cows were fed well, because they trust their milk they might as well trust their hamburger as well,” Tuck told MTN News.
She added that the Kalispell Beef Company is not a short-term fix but a viable business alongside their dairy products moving forward.
Tuck pointed out that the Kalispell Kreamery will remain the top priority for the foreseeable future.
“The dairy will always be the priority, milk cows our always our priority, so as long as it compliments it, as long as the beef sales are well received, people enjoy it, we will continue to do it,” she said.
Ground beef can be purchased from the Kalispell Kreamery Farm Store from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
