Colorado man drives girlfriend’s body across Wyoming, turns himself in to Powell police

POWELL, Wyo.- A 22-year-old Colorado man is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder in Powell, Wyo., after he turned himself in to police Tuesday morning with his girlfriend’s body in his car.

Jonathan Eugene Akin walked into the Powell Police Department and told officers he had killed his girlfriend at their residence in Thornton, Colo., then drove across Wyoming with her body, according to Powell police. The trip is about 500 miles and likely took more than seven-and-a-half hours on Interstate 25.

Powell police said they found the body where Akin said it was and called Thornton, Colo., police to confirm the story.

Thornton police said they discovered a crime scene at the address at Champion’s Park Apartments in Thornton.

Akin is being held at the Park County Sheriff’s Office Jail in Wyoming pending extradition to Colorado.

According to CBS Denver, friends and family identified the woman as Autumn Rivera, who graduated Hyland Christian School in Westminster, Colo. in 2016.
