BILLINGS- The former postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service Office in Miles City has been sentenced to five years probation and fined $2,500 for his role in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine through the mail.
Stephen Michael Miller, 59, had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute meth.
U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme said Wednesday that an investigation found that Miller had warned a suspect, James Toms, in a meth distribution case that police had been monitoring mail sent to his home.
On one occasion, Miller intercepted for Toms a package that contained about four ounces of meth. Miller delivered the package to Toms in exchange for one ounce of the meth.
Four ounces of meth is the equivalent of about 904 individual doses.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a U.S. Department of Justice initiative to reduce violent crime.
