MISSOULA – A Bozeman area man appeared in court Thursday on charges of destruction of government property, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme said.

William David Hutton, 54, made an initial appearance on a criminal complaint before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah C. Lynch. Hutton waived a preliminary hearing. Lynch detained Hutton pending further proceedings.

The complaint charges Hutton with destruction/attempted destruction of government property. Court documents allege Hutton drove his vehicle into an entrance of the Bozeman Federal Building at 10 East Babcock St. on July 8.

If convicted of the most serious crime, Hutton faces a maximum 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
