HELENA -- With COVID-19 keeping a tight wrap on local sports, the Hel'z Belles are taking the time to do good for the community in lieu of practices and bouts.

The Belles held a blood drive at the Red Cross location in Helena, where they managed to fill in every time slot that was available for the six-hour event.

Gigi Acord, or "Frekillz," said the reason they chose to hold the event was so that they could bond with the community while performing a good deed.

"I actually don't think a lot of people know that much about [roller] derby or that it's really even in the community," said Acord. "It's good to like get out there and let the community know about us. And also giving back, like doing blood drives and stuff, that's a great way to be part of the community and merge together."

The Hel'z Belles season was cut short by the Coronavirus Pandemic, but the team hopes to be back in the oval in the Spring of 2021.
