Two Montana snowmobilers were rescued Saturday after they were stuck in the Beartooth Mountains for two nights, according to the Park County Wyoming Sheriff's Office.
Trevor Wayne Deal, 22 of Bridger, and Maison Deacon Ostwald, 21 of Laurel, were reported overdue at 8 p.m. Thursday from their snowmobiling trip in the mountains east of the Top of the World store, the sheriff's office posted on Facebook.
The two had told a friend that one of their snowmobiles had become disabled, and they had abandoned it to seek help, according to the sheriff's office.
Park County Search and Rescue was activated and deployed to the area on snowmobiles Thursday. They were assisted by volunteer members of the Cody Country Snowmobile Association (CCSA) and volunteers from Snow Search.
They did not find the men, and the search resumed Friday.
About 50 searchers were in the area Friday at one time, along with two Blackhawk helicopters from the Cheyenne Army Air National Guard and the Air Force Rescue Wing out of Malmstrom Air Force Base.
Searchers identified a cell phone call from the men around 4 p.m. Friday in the Fantan Lake area and found the abandoned snowmobile. But because of dark conditions, the search was eventually suspended until the next day.
On Saturday, the aerial search continued and picked up tracks from the second snowmobile heading down the base of Table Mountain. Several search snowmobiles began combing the area.
Ground teams later heard Deal and Ostwald calling for help near the bottom of the mountain and found them in relatively good condition, although they were exhausted, dehydrated, and hypothermic.
They were taken to Cody Regional Hospital for evaluation. Deal refused treatment while Ostwald was transported to the hospital and eventually flown to the Idaho Falls Burn Center for treatment of severe frostbite.
