BILLINGS- The Billings Police Department is investigating a fraudulent scam surrounding fake Verizon phones being mailed to customers in the Billings area.

So far, Billings police have received 12 reports of the scam since July 9. They also state there’s been an increase in reports in just the last couple of weeks. Officers said these scams are difficult to investigate and prosecute.

What’s the scam?

Billings police said the scam involves a victim receiving a new phone in the mail from Verizon. The victim then unwittingly activates the phone thinking they have a new phone to use. The activation of the phone results in activation charges and usage fees to the victim’s account.

What should you do?

Do not activate the phone, Billings police say. Instead, contact the Billings police dispatch number to report the scam. Verizon will also want a copy of the police report, your Verizon bill and a photo ID.

To report a scam, call Billings police at 657-8200. For questions concerning your Verizon account you can use the customer service number 1-800-922-0204.
