BILLINGS- Over 300 people crowded into the Billings Clinic Commons Thursday evening to honor the late Dr. Nick Wolter, the hospital’s former CEO.
Wolter died Sept. 7 at the age of 70.
Wolter spent 20 years as chief executive officer at Billings Clinic from 1997 to 2017.
Ten people reflected on his life as a physician and executive.
Dr. Paul Grmoljez said he was with Wolter from the infancy of the hospital when he joined the staff in 1982. Grmoljez said they never agreed completely but they always trusted each other.
Kelley Evans from Beartooth Hospital in Red Lodge said, “Nick was a true champion for rural health care.”
Evans added Wolter emerged as a local, regional, and national health care leader.
In the early 1990s, Wolter played a lead role in the merger of Billings Clinic and Deaconess Medical Center.
Wolter is survived by his four children and nine grandchildren.
