BILLINGS- A new sober active community facility called The Phoenix held its grand opening Tuesday in Billings.

The new fitness center is at 1440 Central Ave. and offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and choose a sober life.

“The active community helps members heal and rebuild their lives,” said Scott Strode, executive director, founder and a recovering substance abuser himself.

Strode said he became sober at 24. For him, getting into a boxing gym was a big part of his early recovery.

“If someone is in active addiction, they can get two days of recovery and try out Pheonix and see that recovery is possible, and meet other people that support him in sobriety,” Strode said. “Also, if someone is coming and they do relapse, hopefully we can re-engage them quickly. Maybe we could turn that two-year relapse into two days instead.”

The Phoenix is a nonprofit group offers cross-fit, rock climbing, yoga and more. It operates in 10 states and 14 cities. The program’s fee is 48 hours of sobriety.
