New app makes riding buses easier in Billings

BILLINGS- Riding a bus in Billings is now easier and more efficient with a tracking system that shows the location of buses.

The Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) indicates where the buses are on city of Billings Metropolitan Transit System (MET Transit) routes.

The AVL is available on smart phones, tablets and computers.

The app tracks the buses by GPS and gives an estimated time of arrival to your location.

“It’s going to be great,” said Kevin Ploehn, director of aviation and transit for the city of Billings. “Winter’s on its way. And if you happen to hit a bad day and don’t want to stand at the bus stop, you can kind of wait inside until the last minute, see that your bus is almost here and run out and meet the bus. You can see every bus in the city on the city grid. It’s a great little tool to have.”

Ploehn said the city can also collect passenger data easier for its reports to the Federal Transit Administration.

More information, instructions and links to download the app are available on the city of Billings MET Transit website.
