ROUNDUP – Undersheriff Shawn Lesnik won the election for sheriff in Musselshell County on Nov. 6, but write-in runnerup Ronnie Burns filed for a recount in district court Monday.

Lesnik won the original count 1,141 votes to 1,101 votes.

The 40-vote margin is a difference of 1.78 percent.

Election Administrator Cheryl Tomassi says the difference needs to be .25 percent for a recount.

Now she says it’s now up to a court to decide whether there will be a recount.

Tomassi says the results have been canvassed and approved and Lesnick is the sheriff-elect.

She said machines came up with a closer result, but election judges examined the write-in names and hand counted the votes for the official tally.
