CHEYENNE, Wyo.- Scammers are calling Wyoming residents and falsely stating relatives have been in car crashes and need immediate cash payment, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The scammers typically state the relative was arrested for drunken driving and need cash for bail and attorney’s fees, the agency said in a Tuesday news release.

The caller ID often shows up as legitimate law enforcement numbers in Dubois, Wyo., or other places in the Cowboy State, according to the release.

Neither the Wyoming Highway Patrol or any other law-enforcement agency would ever call to demand money in such a fashion, the agency stated.

Anyone who receives such a call should verify the number and report it to law enforcement.
