MARINETTE, Wisc.- The future USS Billings completed its final trial in Lake Michigan, putting it on schedule for delivery to the U.S. Navy next year.

Officials at Lockheed Martin Corp., which built the ship, said Monday in a news release that the trials included a full-power run, maneuverability testing and surface and detect-to-engage demonstrations of the ship’s combat system.

The ship is currently known as Littoral Combat Ship 15, designed to support missions including mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare.

The USS Billings is expected to be commissioned in November 2019, and a local commissioning committee has been formed to raise money for the event.
