BILLINGS- In January, Montanans can start to apply for a Real ID.

Over the last few years, the state of Montana has been working toward implementation and compliance with the Real ID Act.

In 2017, the Montana Legislature and Gov. Steve Bullock directed the agency to create an optional driver license that complies with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. That act required states to increase security and authentication for state-issued ID cards with the goal of fighting terrorism.

REAL ID-compliant driver licenses and ID cards have a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of the license to indicate REAL ID compliance.

Montanans can apply for a REAL ID beginning Jan. 7.

Montana previously received an extension from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for REAL ID implementation.

A Montana REAL ID-compliant license or ID or another acceptable form of identification is required to fly domestically and access federal facilities by October 2020.
