BILLINGS- A third-grade student brought a handgun to Washington Elementary School Tuesday on Billings West End, Superintendent Greg Upham confirmed.

The student did not act violently, Upham said, adding that the incident happened at the end of the school day.

“We definitely consider this a very serious issue. We were extremely concerned when a child brings a handgun to school. The child obviously made a poor decision but did not have any intent to hurt or harm anyone,” Upham said.

He added he does not know if the student will be in class Wednesday. He did not say if the gun was loaded.

Parents in the students class received a call from the school’s principal, Deedee Larson, and Upham said the district plans additional communication, including a robocall, Tuesday night.
