RED LODGE – An avalanche of snow fell on the road to Red Lodge Mountain ski area early Monday morning, but no one was injured and no cars were damaged.

Richard McGarvey was heading up to Red Lodge to ski when he was stopped about a mile below the lodge by a massive pile of snow.

The snow filled the entire road and McGarvey said two cars were stopped in front of him.

He estimated that the avalanche occurred at roughly 9 a.m. and tells Q2 News there is close to a foot of fresh snow that fell on the mountain over the weekend.

“It’s beautiful up here,” said McGarvey.

A road grader was able to move the snow and McGarvey was able to snap a few pictures of the large snow pile before one lane of traffic was open just before 9 a.m. Monday morning.

He said the snow was pretty soft, so it moved easily.

“It plugged the road,” said McGarvey.

Crews are working to remove the rest of the snow and get the entire road back open.
