BILLINGS – A professor of sociology at Montana State University Billings received the Fulbright Scholar award this year.

Joy Honea, who is also the acting associate dean at the College of Business, is one of the 8,000 recipients awarded the grant each year. She will be heading to Finland in January.

Honea wants to broaden her studies by going international.

When learning about the different places, Honea said she “realized there are a lot of similarities between Finland and Montana and the suicide rates.” Honea said,

Montana and Finland both have high alcohol abuse and firearm-ownership rates, which is the most common method of suicide, Honea said.

Honea hopes that through her international study she can bring good concrete ideas and ways to combat suicide.

The Fulbright is a scholar program of the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
