LAUREL- Mayor Tom Nelson declared an emergency Friday for Laurel because of the heavy snow accumulation.

In his executive order, Nelson cited the dangerous driving conditions around town and struggles of citizens, including the elderly, to leave their homes or receive deliveries.

The order allows the city to commit all resources to snow plowing and removal, including seeking additional grant money.

The order will remain in effect indefinitely. It can be terminated by the mayor or the Laurel City Council.

According to the National Weather Service, 13 inches of snow have accumulated in the Laurel area.
