BILLINGS- Springtime lowland flooding is always a concern. But this year’s record cold weather could increase the likelihood of ice jam flooding along area waterways.

Over the next 10 days to two weeks, the National Weather Service is forecasting warmer temperatures. In addition to the usual runoff, the above-average thickness of river and waterway ice could increase lowland flooding.

Among other flood prevention tips, the National Weather Service reminds us to stay away from – and off of – ice along the waterways. Livestock and cattle owners should keep their animals away from the water. And it might be a good idea to look into flood insurance.
