BILLINGS- A Billings family added a little extra excitement for the birth of a child when the mother didn’t quite get all the way inside the hospital.
Mckinley Michael was born at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the Billings Clinic.
The Michaels left their home at 8 a.m. and parked the car in the pullout section of the building.
Cassie Michael knew the McKinley was about to be born.
Cassie could not walk, so she stayed in the car while Nathan went for help.
“And I said, ‘I need a wheelchair,” Cassie said. “And at that, my water broke and he ran up the stairs to grab a wheelchair. Luckily he came down with a CNA because he heard me yelling for him and also heard a baby crying.”
While her husband was gone, Cassie had given birth in the passenger seat of the family’s car.
“I couldn’t quite believe what I was hearing, but yeah, I made it to the car pretty quick,” Nathan said.
As is the procedure, one nurse team took care of the baby and another team took care of the mother.
“It’s just so wonderful when everybody’s healthy and happy and it all works out,” said Annie Lundvall, a Billings Clinic RN. “So it’s exciting.”
“Everyone’s doing great,” Cassie said. “We just have a fun story to tell for her birthday now.”
Nathan and Cassie Michael also have a 4-year-old son.
They expect to bring McKinley home on Thursday.
