Downtown Billings businesses evacuated, roads blocked as crews repair broken gas line

BILLINGS- Nearly two dozen employees from the Billings Federal Credit Union and nearby businesses were evacuated Wednesday when a construction crew hit and ruptured a gas line in downtown Billings.

Mark Hanson, spokesman for Montana-Dakota Utilities said the gas line was damaged at about 11:40 a.m. when a crew doing construction on Fourth Avenue North and 26th Street North accidentally hit the line.

Someone digging in the construction site hit the line, said Hanson.

Crews are now on scene working to repair the line. Billings police and Billings firefighters are also on scene to are on scene and a busy downtown road is blocked due to a damaged gas line.

The street was blocked at Fourth Avenue North and 27th Street North.

Fourth Avenue North reopened to traffic shortly after 1 pm.
