BILLINGS- The shuttered Toys ‘R’ Us building on Billings West End will be remodeled and become a Planet Fitness.

A permit was submitted to the city of Billings building department on May 30 with plans to remodel the interior of the existing retail building.

Dave Leon with PF Mangement out of New Jersey is listed on the permit. Leon is a major franchise owner of Planet Fitness locations across the country and plans to invest roughly $1 million into the property, according to the permit.

The current Toys R Us location in Billings was built in 1992 as a 30,000 square-foot building. The land and the building are valued at just over $3.5 million, according to Montana property records.

The building became vacant last summer after the owners of Toys R Us declared bankruptcy and liquidated all 800 stores nationwide.

Langlas and Associates are listed as the contractor on the permit with C2 Architecture as the design firm.

According to its website, Planet Fitness is one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the United States by a number of members and locations.

As of March 31, 2019, Planet Fitness had more than 1,806 stores.

Planet Fitness has other Montana locations including, Great Falls, Helena, and Missoula, as well as in Casper, Wyo.
