A case of whooping cough (pertussis), a highly contagious respiratory disease, was confirmed in Madison County on March 27, according to a press release from the Madison County Public Health Department (MCPHD).
MCPHD said all identified close contacts with the individual were treated for disease prevention, and no other cases have been detected currently in Madison County.
According to the press release, social distancing measures in place due to the coronavirus pandemic "most likely had a positive impact on the limited spread of this disease."
MCPHD confirms 55 negative test results with six positive cases of COVID-19—the disease caused by the coronavirus—in Madison County, including one death, as of April 4.
Two new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Madison County this week in a man in his 20s and a woman in her 40s, according to Melissa Brummell, RN, Public Health Director with MCPHD.
The press release said all close contacts have been notified and are on a 14-day home quarantine.
