WinCo grocery store ready to begin construction in Bozeman

Residents have probably heard talks about a WinCo Foods grocery store a couple of years ago. But then, it seemed like the plans disappeared.

But now, construction is ready to begin.

“They submitted another application for a 75,000-square-foot grocery store and that application was deemed acceptable. They were able to make some design changes that met the city’s codes and we were off and running,” said Bozeman City Commissioner Terry Cunningham.

Or so the city thought.

“Shortly after the commission actually approved the plans in 2018, a third party, a grocery workers union and some local representatives actually sued the city and said that the application was not properly authorized,” Cunningham said.

But after a lengthy court process, the lawsuit was thrown out, which fast forwards us to today.

“And they have been given the go-ahead to start construction. My understanding is that they’re going to start construction within 30 to 45 days at the site,” said Cunningham.

Which means more options for Bozeman residents.

“Every retailer has their own niche. Every retailer has their own appeal, in terms of shoppers," Cunningham said.

WinCo Foods is an employee-owned supermarket chain that started in 1967 in Idaho. The grocery stores offers bulk purchases of foods and other grocery items, where customers bag their own purchases.
