Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon announced Tuesday he is allowing gyms, barber shops, hair and nail salons, tattoo parlors and other personal-service businesses to reopen on May 1.

In addition, Gordon is easing restrictions to allow day cares to reopen and issuing guidance to allow hospital to resume elective surgeries as part of the state's phased reopening.

He also extended his order limiting public gatherings to under 10 people through May 10. A directive requiring all visitors into Wyoming to self-quarantine for 14 days expires April 30 but will be reviewed Wednesday.

All of the businesses reopening will be subject to social-distancing guidelines, including limiting the number of patrons, requirements for staff to wear masks, screening patrons, eliminating waiting areas and other regulations.

Gordon ordered the closure of these businesses March 25 to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The new orders also allow local health departments to speed up reopening in some counties with fewer cases of COVID-19.

“We all recognize that the virus has had severe impacts in some Wyoming communities, while other towns and counties have been spared,” Gordon said in a statement. “This plan takes into account the continued safety of our citizens and establishes a process to consider some case-by-case exceptions to state health orders when appropriate. It is important that we do not surrender the ground we have taken and that we extend our gains against this virus.”
