BUTTE- A Butte agency concerned with protecting the environment has a clever way to avoid using plastic grocery bags.

Members of Energy Corps. with the National Center of Appropriate Technology in Butte are teaching people how to make their own grocery bags out of old shirts.

The Butte Rescue Mission donated several shirts to the group for a workshop they’re holding Friday evening to show a simple way to make the bags.

The goal is to cut down on single-use plastic bags.

“This is what we thought is a really easy thing the kids could do, take an old T-shirt that they’re not using anymore and turn it into a reusable bag so they can eliminate those one-use plastic bags that they use at the grocery store,” said Claudia Hewston of Energy Corps.
