BILLINGS- An astronaut aboard the International Space Station aimed a camera towards the Rocky Mountains to capture an image of Flathead Lake.

According to the post on their Facebook page, the lake we see today on the western edge of Flathead National Forest is a remnant of Glacial Lake Missoula.

The lighter-toned parts of the lake are due to the inflow of sediment from seasonal snow melt.

Today cherry orchards line Flathead Lake and they are irrigated by water from the basin. These orchards, along with others in surrounding cities, contribute to an annual sweet cherry production of 4 million pounds.
