BUTTE - Butte celebrated the Chinese New Year in a scaled down way by performing a blessing for good fortune for Uptown businesses.

The ritual was held outside the Mai Wah Museum Saturday morning in which the head of the dragon chases the pearl of wisdom in recognition of the year of the ox.

Organizers usually hold a parade through Uptown but canceled it due to pandemic. However, they felt it was important to perform the blessing.

“It’s especially important this year, we want to say goodbye to the year of the rat and scurry it out the door and welcome in the year of the ox and kind of march forward strongly and steadily and recover in all kinds of ways,” said event organizer Pat Munday.

The parade is held each year in honor of Butte's Chinese heritage.
