A man was taken to the hospital after falling through the ice on a Lake in the Mission Valley on Monday night.

Lake County Sheriff Don Bell says that at 10:45 p.m. Lake County 911 took a report of a male who had fallen through the ice on McDonald Lake.

Upon the arrival of a deputy and a Flathead Tribal police officer, a male was found on the south side of the lake. He had self-rescued and a friend was rendering first aid.

The male had fallen in the lake an hour prior to the report and had to break through 50-to-75 feet of ice in order to reach the lake shore, according to Bell.

When the officers found him, he was unable to walk and was in a hypothermic state.

Bell says the officers carried him about a half mile to awaiting EMS and Mission Fire units who then transported him to a local hospital.
