A young girl from Pennsylvania who is fighting cancer is on a mission to help animal shelters across the country, including the one here in Great Falls.

Since March, 13-year-old Avery Sontheimer has used a GoFundMe account to raise money to buy gift cards for animal shelters.

She just sent a gift card to the Maclean-Cameron Animal Adoption Center in Great Falls.

"We just went online and looked up shelters and we saw yours and we just picked it,” Sontheimer said "If you can, donate because it really helps out the shelters and all the animals. The people that work at the shelter really appreciate not just the amount but the thought that you did it.”

As of Monday, she has raised more than $7,400 and sent gift cards to hundreds of shelters across the country. She also includes a letter explaining who she is and what she’s doing.

Her dream is to one day become a veterinary technician or own her own shelter.
