Update: Woman killed following courthouse gun incident

Update Mar. 14, 5:00 p.m. — Law enforcement has confirmed a woman was killed Friday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting in downtown Helena.

A Friday evening joint update from the Helena Police Department and Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office stated numerous 911 calls were made about a woman at the courthouse with a pistol.

"One of the complainants indicated there was an adult female with a pistol. This female had made threats of shooting staff within the courthouse as well as a Judge," said the agencies in a press release. "In the courthouse, she made threats with the pistol to the Courthouse Security Staff. The female then left the Courthouse and started walking east on Broadway Ave."

HPD Officers and Lewis and Clark County Deputies made contact with the woman at the 500 block of Broadway Ave. Law enforcement says the woman was uncompliant with commands leading to them shooting her.

Medical aid was given to the woman but she died on scene from her injuries.

The Montana Department of Criminal Investigations will investigate the officer-involved shooting since both HPD and the Sheriff's Office were involved.

The investigation is ongoing.


Original story — Police have staged in the area of the county courthouse on E. Broadway for an incident Friday afternoon.

The first reports came in right around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Lewis and Clark Co. Sheriff's Office Capt. Bradley Bragg said the initial calls came in as an active shooter at the courthouse.

Residents in the area told MTN that they heard what sounded like multiple gunshots.

E. Broadway has been shut down in the area of the Lewis and Clark District Courthouse for investigation.

People are asked to avoid the area.

According to the city there is no threat to the public at this time. No other details have been released.

Law enforcement officers from the Helena Police Department, Lewis and Clark Co. Sheriff's Office, Helena Fire and an ambulance from St. Peter's Health are on scene.
