This is the second major public event that Michelle Obama will skip. She was not present at Jimmy Carter's memorial at Washington National Cathedral last week due to a reported scheduling conflict. Former President Obama attended the event and was seated next to Trump. Cameras showed them chatting and laughing at times.

Other former presidents, including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with their spouses, are expected to attend the Jan. 20 inauguration in Washington. They all showed up to Trump's inauguration in 2017, as did Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama is not the first high-profile person to skip out on an inauguration. Trump did not attend Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021 following an election defeat.
