BILLINGS — With a few days remaining in the 2020 MontanaFair, the Girl Scouts booth is putting a new twist on an old favorite.
"One of the food vendors that people look forward to every year at MontanaFair is the Girl Scout booth. We are known as the corn and s'mores booth. We have sweet corn on the cob, which we've done for years, we have it again this year, 2 dollars a cob, and we also have s'mores. We're the Girl Scouts. We created the s'mores." Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming Marketing/ Communications Manager Kristi Osterlund said.
And for the first time, people can also buy Girl Scout Cookies, right at the booth.
All of the proceeds go to help Girl Scouts in need of financial assistance. One of 3 Girl Scouts in Montana and Wyoming receive assistance.
This ranges from uniforms, to the $25 annual membership fee and activities and events.
"Girl Scouts has been around for more than a century. And we have-we've evolved with the times and always giving them what they need, and I think Girl Scouts is more important than ever to offer that community and that support, and you're offering programs virtually in order to still be an important part of the girls' lives," Osterlund said.
The cookie-selling program usually runs February through April but was delayed this year because of the pandemic.
"We had many boxes left over just due to the hiccup of COVID during our cookie program," Osterlund said.
"So we got creative this year. One of the favorites is deep-fried food. We took two of our cookie varieties and took our Girl Scout S'mores, and our Do si dos, which are our peanut butter ones. And those we have deep-fried, and they are delicious," Osterlund said, "People ask why not the other flavors and the reason is the chocolate on the outside doesn't work in the fryer. But we'll keep experimenting."
Osterlund said that the entire team sampled the concoction for quality control.
"Our entire office got to give their input on the cookie varieties before they went mainstream," she said.
Though the season usually corresponds with the school year, kids can sign up to become a Girl Scout, at any time.
