BILLINGS – Severe thunderstorms are likely Thursday, but not for Billings.

Large hail and damaging winds were reported in southeast Montana Wednesday evening as severe thunderstorms boomed across the prairie.

Some locations in Powder River County reported baseball-size hail and damaging winds.

An elevated risk of severe thunderstorms covers a larger geographical area Thursday, mostly from central to northeast Montana. Cities most likely to be affected by these storms on Thursday include Great Falls, Helena, Havre and Lewistown.

Although Thursday’s particular weather conditions are more conducive to the development of large hail, those same conditions will somewhat decrease the chance for severe thunderstorms to occur.

The forecast for Billings:

Today: Mostly sunny and warmer with a 20% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Thunderstorms may produce gusty winds and small hail. Today’s high: 87.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms and a low of 59.

Friday: Sunny skies, light northeast winds and a high of 83.
